Two of the brightest treasures in my life are my daughters, and my oldest recently had her birthday. For the celebration, I decorated our backyard in an array of yellows and peaches and creamy whites. The colors are whimsical and airy, youthful and joyful, perfect for a young kids floral birthday party.
In my arrangements, you’ll see I never forgot that children are the focus of this event. The tables are low. There are rugs and floor pillows and a tent for hiding and giggling in. The flower decorations and desserts are within easy reach.
For the flowers, I focused on roses and ranunculus. I’ve already said how ranunculus flowers are some of my best material to work with. They are cup-shaped blooms with layers of petals, delicate as crepe, twirling round and round a distinctive center. They come in such a beautiful range of colors. So I knew the sunny pigments I chose would complement these two specially cut roses: Beatrice and Shimmer.
Beatrice and Shimmer are two of my favorite roses. They are high quality blooms--you might have seen them at a few weddings--and I couldn't miss the chance to use them at a special event like my daughter's birthday.
David Austin and his family in England are known for being one of the best and most passionate rose breeders, growing their flowers like precious pieces of art. The Beatrice Rose is no exception. It is their first yellow cut rose.
Beatrice has various tones of yellow depending on the year, which pale as the color moves from its ruffled center to the outer petals. More often than not, you'll see them with a buttery golden heart. The richly colored petals begin as ruffled centers then bloom into a frilly loose swirl. The blooms are held up by strong, upright stems and emit a gorgeous scent of myrrh and hints of fruit and almond.
To complement Beatrice, I chose the Shimmer Rose. It is a luxurious, large-headed pinky-peach bloom. You might even call the color apricot. You might also notice a hint of yellow in the center, giving the flower an almost glow-like effect. The petals open into a ripple of fluffy, high rise cupped rosettes.
Shimmer Roses are typically grown on Ecuadorian soil. And like any beautiful long-stemmed Ecuadorian rose, they come with very little thorns. Perfect for arranging.
Beatrice and Shimmer Roses blend beauty and elegance. But the pastel-like color combination also makes a lovely and playful palette for any child’s birthday, and I love how it all turned for my daughter’s celebration.
