Intimate Summer Party at Roger's Garden in Corona Del Mar

When a client asked me to design an intimate summer party at the Farmhouse at Roger’s Garden, I had to say yes.

Roger’s Garden is an award-winning luxury home, garden and landscape design center in Orange County. A landmark of Corona del Mar for more than 30 years. Seven acres of beautiful greenery, flowering plants, sparkling fountains, and seasonal herbs and vegetables...and home to a farm-to-table, open-air restaurant called Farmhouse.

For my flower-loving client and her friends, a lunch of locally sourced foods in a bright garden setting was the perfect place to celebrate a friend's achievement. I couldn’t agree more.

For the table design, I focused on the why of the party: the ladies were there to surprise and celebrate a friend graduating with an MBA from the UCI Paul Merage School Of Business. Because UCI’s colors are blue and gold, I went with a blue and orange/yellow color palette.

Blue and orange are complementary colors. They are also considered essential colors in photography.

So if memorable photos are your goal, you’ll find blue and orange pop up and contrast each other really well. To add depth, I also brought in yellows and purples. All four colors make a pretty bold combination. However, in the warm wooded venue, atop the white lace and light burlap, the flowers were like perfect splashes of paint.

The flowers: purple statice, blue hydrangeas, yellow carnations, orange roses, blue thistle, orange dahlias, and dancing lady orchids. If you look closely at the pictures, you’ll also spot several lemons.

I was very happy to hear my client and her friends loved the flowers and colors I chose. With all the greenery around the table, it wouldn’t have made sense to use much greenery in the table centerpieces or design. It also goes to show that events don’t always need greens and pastels to achieve an organic, farm fresh and sweet look. Lean into natural woods and creams, and you can make bright, bold, beautiful colors reflect the happy occasion--and the remarkable person you’re celebrating. :)
